Abstract

The article analyzes recent New Zealand legislation on the legalization of medically assisted death, the End of Life Choice Act 2019. After describing the previous attempts at legalization, particular importance is reserved to the Seales v. Attorney-General case, which, in addition to reopening the legal-social debate on euthanasia, led the New Zealand Parliament to address and regulate this issue. The EOLC Act aims to offer the possibility to people, who suffer from a terminal disease and meet certain requirements, to legally request medical assistance to end their lives, establishing in detail a legitimate process. The article also examines the effects and consequences on the civil and criminal profile, determined by the entry into force of the law.
